When it comes to flight time, each battery charge delivers up to 40 minutes. Note that while the system supports accessories like a spotlight, microphone, and parachute, among others, the maximum payload capacity is 12 ounces. Pilot the drone up to 7.5 miles with Connect SL (direct link), and go further anywhere there is cellular coverage using Skydio Connect 5G.

And with the a flight range of 20 km (12.4 mi), the SwitchBlade-Elite can cover vast areas during fire assessments and provide lots of visibility over large forest fires or urban fires.

Its imaging system includes a dual optical 4K camera system with hybrid stabilization and a continuous zoom range from 1x to 32x, seamlessly switching between wide angle and telephoto lenses. For the thermal camera, it has a FLIR Boson micro-bolometer, capable of detecting minute temperature variations with high precision. It provides detailed thermographic imaging from an altitude of up to 40 meters, highlighting hot and cold spots in both color and monochrome modes. Plus with the Thermal Analyzer mode in the FreeFlight 6 USA app, you can carry out detailed thermal analysis directly on the device.

Security is also a key aspect of the ANAFI USA; it includes Secure Digital (SD) card encryption to protect photos and videos if the drone or SD card is lost, a secure WPA2 Wi-Fi connection to verify and encrypt communication between the remote controller and the drone, and signed firmware to prevent software tampering. Additionally, the drone's 32x optical zoom system and two 21-megapixel cameras provide detailed visuals from a safe distance of up to 3 miles, allowing operators to survey large fire scenes without putting personnel at risk.

Rapid deployment and portability are critical in emergency situations, and the ANAFI USA delivers in both areas. The fire department drone is operational in less than a minute, ensuring that firefighters can quickly gather aerial intelligence in such operations where no second can be spared.

Weighing approximately 500 grams (1.1 lbs) and featuring a foldable design, it is easy to transport and deploy even in remote or hard-to-reach locations. Its ability to take off and land from the hand, along with GPS-enabled indoor flight capabilities, makes it versatile for various operational scenarios, including navigating through collapsed structures or tight urban environments.

This UAV is also used when dealing with wildfires! In 2018, the U.S. Forest Service introduced its first national UAS Program Manager, leading to the Pacific Southwest Region employing UAS specialists by 2020 for its strategic initiatives. By 2023, this region logged over double its previous year's drone flight hours, supporting essential operations such as wildfire management and watershed health assessments.

10. Windracers ULTRA

Closing off our list is a drone that’s often referred to as the "Jeep of the skies," developed by Windracers, a company known for its innovations in autonomous cargo aircraft. The drone is specifically engineered to address the complex logistics challenges in delivering crucial supplies efficiently and timely applications have recently extended , but its applications have recently extended to firefighting tasks. In fact, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have successfully tested an innovative wildfire prevention system involving a swarm of autonomous drones. 

Partnering with British drone manufacturer Windracers, along with scientists from the University of Bristol and University of Sheffield, the project aimed to develop early mitigation strategies to detect and suppress wildfires before they grow uncontrollable. The Windracer ULTRA was used here, carrying fire retardant and equipped with AI-driven thermal and optical imaging systems.

The trial, conducted at Preddanack airport in Cornwall, tested the capabilities of the drones in automatically detecting and approaching controlled fires. The drones were able to relay fire data to firefighters, intelligently self-coordinate, and deploy fire retardant as first responders. The drones' autonomous capabilities, backed by swarm technology, were designed based on input from global firefighting teams to ensure ease of use and effectiveness.
